California-based Label Not Able To Sustain In Sluggish Economy

Sustainable Collective, a collection of convertible knits made from certified organic cotton and recycled fabrics, has announced the collection will close at the end of this season due to sluggish sales. The California-based company launched in its men's and women's collection of tees and separates in Spring 2007. Included in its sustainable mission was an adherence to a strict fair labor policy, a  commitment to using plant and root-based dye techniques, such as those derived from weeds, South American fair-trade teas and the use of recycled tags and packaging.

Mary Adam, of Sustainable Collective's parent company, Morgan Holdings LLC, said buyers have been hesitant to enter this niche market. "In this economy, sustainable habits are the first cut from people's lifestyle because it's more expensive," she said.

For those living on the other coast, Convoy Apparel and Sustainable Collective are selling their overstock at 75% off. For men, this means all items are under $20. The price point of the collection ranged from $35 for tees to $150 for dresses.
