Ok. We know this section is reserved for boutiques offering fabulous eco-friendly and sustainable wares, but we felt we had to give a shout out to Penny Licks. A new organic and vegan sweet shop, which opened recently in Brooklyn, Penny Licks offers the most extensive selection of non-guilty, non-dairy pleasures we've seen. Vegan mint chip was the favorite among the vegan ice cream flavors, which includes coffee and vanilla, among others.

Organic flavors are made from locally produced organic whole milk and include mint chip, chocolate chocolate chip, chocolate and coffee bean. And, for an extra buck, add organic berries to any scoop. While at $3.50 a scoop, a serving is a far cry from the traditional penny lick popular in the nineteenth and twentieth century, which consisted of a small glass serving of ice cream sold through street vendors for penny, it's worth every penny.



Other goodies include the old-fashioned egg cream, vegan cakes ($6/slice, $45/whole cake) - we're dying to try to the chocolate mouse bomb - and vegan and organic pies ($4.50/slice, $25 whole pie). There is also an extensive selection of "penny" candies, and organic and vegan cookies and brownies.

Penny Licks doesn't limit its organic philosophy to its sweets. All the containers are made from biodegradable materials, a further testament to the shop's motto: "Thoughtful consumers can shop to change the future." We'll eat to that!
