Europe has always been way ahead of the game in terms of conscientious consumption and sustainable design. (The German town of Marburg wants to require solar panels on new as well as existing buildings, according to the New York Times. Nuf, said.) But in terms of green fashion, the aesthetic has been well, a little comci comca. No longer. European labels, particularly those from France, Denmark and Sweden have become a strong presence in the sustainable fashion movement -- particularly in the luxury market -- with the famous Pret-a-Porter trade show now offering an ethical division, So Ethic. So, for those of you with enough frequent flier miles to cross the pond this summer, here's a list of labels to check out, provided you have enough dough left over to shop.

If in France, be sure to check out French brands Commuun and Ekyog. Ekyog offers sophisticated separates made from organic (bio) cotton and micro-modal. The collection includes a range of tops, skirts, sweaters and jackets, all of which can be found in one of their dozen or so stores located throughout the country. The three year-old Commuun offers a more architectural aesthetic with the "core idea of all collections drawn from the balance and tensions found in nature." Commuun uses only organic and natural fabrics. Available at Le Claireur in Paris and Tokyo.

Dutch label Kiilerich takes the bohemian trend upscale with its collection of ankle-length dresses in a range of rainbow-hued silk chiffons. The mission of the company is to "prove it possible to be a part of the fashion industry and still have a healthy respect and awareness for the environment." The collection is produced under fair working conditions in the European Union. Get this hippy dress stateside at Kaight or at select boutiques throughout the EU.

And if you happen to be in Germany, Austria or Sweden, be sure to stock up on some Kuyichi denim. Ultra hip, organic and fair-trade, Kuyichi offers a range of men and women's styles at a decent price. The collection ranges from $165 to $200.
