Chloe Jo Berman

NYC's Hottest Green Girl

On a recent Monday afternoon, Chloe Jo Berman fluttered around her Upper East Side apartment as she talked about her life as a vegan and animal rights activist. Her air was casual and breezy, so much so that one barely notices the amount of facts and information she tosses out. That's exactly Berman's MO -- to educate in subtle ways. And it works. She's sexy, bold, outspoken and known nationwide as the fearless leader of the Girlie Girl Army, a crew of trendsetting girls and guys at the vortex of the city's creative scene.

For instance, most days, Berman can be spotting on the back of her fiancé's motorcycle, buzzing down to the Lower East Side to Baby Cakes for vegan cupcakes or popping across the Williamsburg Bridge for an art opening. Yep, this glamazon proves that you can have it all - including a hot fiancé, a deal for her own show on a major network, and a devoted army that is 15,000 strong and includes a cadre of celeb friends - and still live low-impact and cruelty-free.

The GirlieGirl Army: Your Glamazon Guide to Living, her weekly newsletter is littered with subtle -- and, at times, not-so-subtle -- sound-bites on the cruelty of factory farming and the benefits of a plant-based diet. But it's also chock-full of the latest sample sales, the best new songstress and the best spots to get organic and chic clothes on the cheap, helping Berman to emerge as one of the most outspoken advocates of being green.

"Everything I no longer want is recycled, given away on freecycle.com, donated, or re-used somehow," she says. "My fiancé and I are also pretty hardcore about conserving energy and water," she adds. "It seems odd at first, but you get used to unplugging appliances before you leave the house, flushing the toilet a little less, and using the AC sparingly in summer."

Named as Heeb Magazine's Top 100 as an entrepreneur, Berman also counts among her list of roles writer, green expert, animal rescue gal, radio host, online personality and ethical fashion expert. Many of these roles overlap to position Berman as the hot green girl, which also happens to be the title of a TV show in which she'll star on the Style network.

She's also Farm Sanctuary's celebrity liaison and event planner and a committed activist.

"Tiny steps of activism are what creates huge leaps of change," she says. "We all have a responsibility, as inhabitants of this earth, to do something."
